The History of Reflexology -

There are many theories about the invention of Reflexology.  Many people believe that it came about through either Egypt or China.  While it is true that these locations clearly performed foot work they did not practice what we today consider Reflexology.  Reflexology uses maps of the hands, feet, and ears to indicate reflex points which many times have links to various parts of the body.  While science has yet to prove the direct connection between reflexes and their corresponding body parts, there has been much hands on evidence that there are some ties.  Reflexology was actually first introduced by Dr. William Fitzgerald in 1917 in the United States.  Dr. Fitzgerald came out with a book known as Zone Therapy which theorized that their were 10 vertical zones on the feet that related to 10 vertical zones of the body.

In 1924 Dr Joe Shelby Riley postulated the theory of their being horizontal zones both on the feet and the body.

Then in 1938 Eunice Ingham published the first book referencing foot reflexology.

In 1957 Doctor Paul Nogier, in Lyon, France was the first to document the Reflexology Map of the Human Body on the outer ear is a method used by many doctors today called Auriculotherapy.

In 1982 Bill Flocco coined the word Ear Reflexology, popularizing the Integration of Foot Hand Ear Reflexology around the world.
